赫尔曼·麦尔维尔的《漂亮水手》是一个回顾性和预言性的作品,这个故事"集合"了麦尔维尔最后几年的思想和艺术精华。在麦尔维尔一贯熟练使用的故事表面之下,《漂亮水手》是事实和谎言的结合体。基于认知论的水平,这个故事阐述了在创造性过程中事实是怎样转变的;这里麦尔维尔运用了神话因素来质疑圣经中的"事实"。在美学的水平上,《漂亮水手》体现了麦尔维尔的艺术理论。在《漂亮水手》中,希伯来文化和希腊文化的辩证关系象征性地呈现在人物设置和他们的行为上。
