索尔兹伯里的约翰是中世纪的著名政治思想家。他提出了"诛杀暴君"的著名理论,主张国家应由合法的君主统治,当出现不合法的暴君时,应当将其诛杀。同时他也认为由于客观原因,人们还无法直接诛杀暴君。这一理论在西方政治思想史上占有重要地位,为限制君主权力的政治主张提供了重要依据。
