生态批评长期以来偏好以环境为主题和内容的现实主义文本,当遇到未明确主题化环境的叙事文本,则显得捉襟见肘。有鉴于此,伊琳·詹姆斯提出生态叙事学的阅读模式,从内容和主题转向形式和策略,从而为所有的叙事打开了生态话语之门。故事世界的生态叙事学阅读,即通过对那些帮助读者沉浸于主观空间、时间和体验中的文本线索的分析,为读者提供对全球环境的文化多样性理解和体验,培养读者的环境洞察力和对差异的敏感性,重塑读者的环境想象,从而实现文学在保护地球方面发挥的不可或缺的作用。生态叙事学不仅拓宽和推动了生态批评的发展,而且丰富了叙事学研究的政治和环境维度,同时也是发展跨文化议程的一种有效方法。
